Using supercritical carbon dioxide, a method also used to decaffeinate coffee beans, this advanced technology preserves key components of matcha. The caffeine content is reduced from over 3% to below 0.4% (based on analysis), while important functional compounds such as theanine and catechins are retained at nearly 100%.
When prepared with the basic recipe of 2g of matcha, one cup of decaf matcha contains about 4–8mg of caffeine. According to the FDA, an 8-ounce (about 240ml) cup of decaf coffee contains 2–15mg of caffeine. Therefore, in terms of caffeine content, our decaf matcha is comparable to decaf coffee.
This product is entirely made in Japan—from cultivation, tencha processing, and decaffeination to grinding.
