Making Specialty Coffee Easy to Understand
In an industry often filled with technical terminology and complex flavor descriptions, Be Bright Coffee has chosen a different approach.
Founded with the belief that great coffee should be approachable rather than intimidating, the company focuses on making specialty coffee easy for anyone to understand and enjoy. Whether customers are longtime coffee enthusiasts or stepping into a specialty café for the first time, the goal is the same: help them feel confident in their choices.
Instead of leading with origin names or processing methods, Be Bright organizes its offerings into simple flavor categories such as “Rich & Smooth” or “Bright & Lively.” The idea is to help customers understand what they are about to drink before introducing deeper details about origin and production.
“The best way I explain it is: how would I sell coffee to my mom?” Frank says. “If I tell her a coffee is bright and fruity, she knows exactly what she’s getting.”
That philosophy extends beyond the café menu to staff training, customer interactions, and even the company’s website, where customers can discover coffees that match their personal preferences through a guided quiz experience.
Creating an Approachable Café Experience
For Be Bright, making coffee approachable does not mean oversimplifying it. Instead, it means creating tools that help customers navigate specialty coffee at their own pace.
The café’s signature beverage menu serves as an entry point for many guests, offering drinks designed to be enjoyable, familiar, and easy to understand. Beyond those beverages, coffees are organized by flavor profile rather than technical terminology, helping customers choose with confidence regardless of their level of coffee knowledge.
Whether someone is looking for something rich and chocolatey or bright and fruit-forward, the goal is to make the selection process as intuitive as possible.
This customer-first mindset has shaped not only the menu design, but also how Be Bright trains its team and communicates with customers both in-store and online.
Matcha’s Growing Role at Be Bright
While coffee remains at the heart of the business, matcha has become an increasingly important part of Be Bright’s menu over the past several years.
According to Frank, matcha was once something the café simply offered because customers expected it to be available. Today, customer expectations have changed significantly. Color, flavor, freshness, and origin have all become more important considerations as consumers become more familiar with high-quality matcha.
As customer interest in matcha continued to grow, Be Bright began paying closer attention to its matcha program and the products it was serving.
What began as a supporting menu item gradually evolved into a category that deserved the same level of care and attention as the café’s coffee offerings.
As customer interest in matcha continued to grow, Be Bright began looking for more than just a supplier.
The team wanted greater transparency, stronger connections to origin, and confidence in the consistency of what they were serving.
That search eventually led them to Matcha Direct.
According to Frank, one of the biggest differences was moving from a product purchased through an intermediary relationship to one supported by a direct connection to the source. The ability to source freshly ground matcha from a long-established producer in Japan brought a greater sense of confidence and transparency to the program.
The opportunity to visit tea farms in Japan and meet the people behind the product further strengthened that connection. For Be Bright, understanding where products come from is important, and sharing that connection with customers is part of the value the café hopes to provide.
Perhaps most importantly, the grind-to-order approach offered something Frank had not seen elsewhere in the industry.
“The freshness really shows in the taste,” he explains.
Crafting Matcha Experiences Customers Enjoy
Just as Be Bright simplifies coffee, the team approaches matcha with accessibility in mind.
When developing matcha drinks, the focus is on balance, approachability, and allowing the character of the tea to remain present. Milk-based beverages are designed to complement rather than overpower the matcha itself.
Presentation also plays an important role. One technique the team enjoys using is a cascading pour that creates a natural gradient between milk and matcha, adding a visual element to the experience.
Innovation remains an ongoing part of the process.
New beverages often take weeks of testing and refinement, with the entire team participating in tastings and feedback sessions. Current projects include new seasonal matcha offerings incorporating citrus notes, cold foam, and house-developed flavor combinations.
Quality That Customers Notice
The effects of these efforts have become increasingly visible.
What was once a relatively minor offering has become one of the café’s most consistently popular menu categories.
“Matcha used to never be a top-ten item. Now it is, every month.”
One change that reflects the company’s commitment to quality was the decision to reduce matcha drinks from 16 ounces to 12 ounces.
Rather than maximizing volume, the goal was to create a more concentrated and flavorful experience by reducing the amount of milk in each beverage.
Although the team initially worried about customer reactions, the response was overwhelmingly positive.
“Our customers are looking for quality over quantity,” Frank explains.
Perhaps the strongest validation has come from inside the company itself.
According to Frank, Matcha Direct is the first matcha that the entire team has been genuinely excited about and proud to stand behind. That enthusiasm naturally carries over into customer conversations and day-to-day service.
Looking Ahead
Be Bright continues to evolve its matcha offerings alongside its coffee program.
The company is currently developing a dedicated rotating matcha signature drink that will remain a consistent feature of the menu throughout the year, while seasonal offerings will continue to introduce new flavors and experiences.
At the same time, the team continues refining operational techniques that help maintain quality as demand grows, balancing traditional preparation methods with practical café workflows.
While trends and customer preferences will continue to evolve, Be Bright’s mission remains consistent: making specialty coffee and matcha more approachable, understandable, and enjoyable for everyone.
