A Mobile Café with a Community-First Mindset
On California’s Central Coast, Tiny Cafe has built a loyal following through a simple philosophy: serve exceptional drinks and create meaningful connections with customers.
Unlike a traditional café, Tiny Cafe began as a mobile coffee and matcha cart, allowing the team to bring its offerings directly to different neighborhoods, markets, and events throughout San Luis Obispo. While operating a mobile concept comes with challenges, from changing weather to location logistics, founder Colin sees those limitations as part of what makes the business unique.
Being mobile has allowed Tiny Cafe to meet customers where they are and develop a close relationship with its community. Whether operating as a cart, a pop-up, or eventually a permanent café, the goal remains the same.
“We’re trying to create a community hub.”
That sense of community has become a defining part of the Tiny Cafe experience and continues to guide the company as it grows.
Raising the Standard for Matcha
Before Tiny Cafe launched its current matcha program, matcha was only offered in a very limited capacity.
Rather than working with a dedicated supplier, the café relied on small quantities brought back from Japan by Colin’s mother. While customers enjoyed the drinks, consistency was difficult to maintain and expanding the program was nearly impossible.
As Tiny Cafe explored other options, many products failed to meet expectations.
“We received samples that were marketed as ceremonial grade, but the color just wasn’t there.”
Finding a supplier that could provide quality, consistency, and flexibility was just as important as finding the right matcha itself. Tiny Cafe eventually found that combination through Matcha Direct. Its focus on freshly ground matcha and the ability to order in practical quantities aligned well with the café’s approach to quality and freshness.
Maintaining freshness without carrying excess inventory was particularly appealing. White-label retail options also made it possible to offer customers the same matcha they enjoyed in the café, creating a seamless connection between the in-store experience and at-home preparation.
For Colin, the flexibility to introduce retail products without unnecessary complexity, while expanding offerings at a comfortable pace, was one of the key advantages of working with Matcha Direct.
Creating a Matcha Experience Customers Remember
Over time, Tiny Cafe developed a distinctive approach to matcha that emphasizes the character of the
tea itself.
Its most popular drink, appropriately named the “Favorite Matcha,” combines premium matcha with a house-made syrup crafted from organic cane sugar, cardamom, and vanilla. The drink is intentionally prepared in a tea-forward style with only a small amount of milk, allowing the color, aroma, and flavor of the matcha to remain the focal point.
Regular customers can also access hidden menu items, including koicha, the thicker and more concentrated preparation traditionally enjoyed in Japan.
These offerings have helped Tiny Cafe establish a unique reputation in San Luis Obispo.
According to Colin, customers sometimes compare Tiny Cafe’s matcha experience to what they might expect from well-known specialty cafés in cities such as Los Angeles or San Francisco.
Standing Out Through Quality
As matcha prices rose across the industry, many cafés faced difficult decisions about pricing and product quality.
Tiny Cafe chose to remain focused on consistency. Rather than changing the customer experience, Colin continued serving the same quality matcha that had helped build the café’s reputation.
That decision reinforced something he had already observed in San Luis Obispo: customers were seeking quality first.
Today, people regularly describe Tiny Cafe as serving some of the best matcha in town. According to Colin, maintaining quality and consistency has been a key part of earning that reputation.
“People say Tiny Cafe has the best matcha in town because the quality hasn’t changed.”
People increasingly visit Tiny Cafe specifically for matcha, drawn by an experience they cannot easily find elsewhere.
Bringing the Café Experience Home
Alongside its beverage menu, Tiny Cafe offers retail matcha for customers who want to recreate their favorite drinks at home. By utilizing Matcha Direct’s white-label program, Tiny Cafe has been able to offer the same matcha served in its café as a retail product for customers to enjoy at home.
For Colin, retail sales are a natural extension of the café experience. Customers first discover the matcha through Tiny Cafe’s drinks, then bring the same matcha home to enjoy themselves.
The flexibility of offering café service and retail products using the same matcha has allowed Tiny Cafe to grow both sides of the business organically. Customers who enjoy the quality in the café can easily continue that experience at home, creating a natural connection between the two.
“We don’t really advertise. People try it, enjoy it, and want to recreate it themselves.”
That direct connection between the café experience and at-home consumption has helped Tiny Cafe steadily expand its matcha program while maintaining the same focus on quality and consistency.
Looking Ahead
Tiny Cafe is currently preparing to open its first permanent café location in San Luis Obispo, creating a dedicated space where customers can enjoy both specialty coffee and an expanded matcha menu.
Future plans include matcha soft serve, additional café locations, and a destination-style concept near California’s wine country. Colin also hopes to introduce even more premium tea experiences as the business evolves.
While the business continues to grow, its core philosophy remains unchanged: delivering exceptional quality while creating a place where people feel connected.
“It’s always been about creating an experience people can connect with.”
For Tiny Cafe, matcha is more than a beverage. It is one way of bringing people together.
